I’m a big believer in eating dinner together at the dining room table, even if it means eating take-out. My 3 year old already loves to ask “how was your day, dad” even though he interrupts us before we are even able to answer his question. We believe relationship building typically begins around food.
Let’s talk Design!
Chairs & Comfort
I chose to buy comfortable chairs because I think you linger longer if you are more comfortable. Comfort is a huge part of hospitality so that has been a main drive in a lot of the design choices I made with this house. I know your thinking “why would you buy fabric dining room chairs, you rookie!” Well, I may be crazy… or I just may care more about the people in those chairs then the chairs themselves. Also I got them on allmodern for a great price, and my kids are still small enough that they like to eat in their highchair or some sort of seat. Worst-case scenario… I put a towel underneath my toddler.
We extended the living room molding into the dining room and added wallpaper, which really gave it the accent it needed. I am planning on hanging something on the wall but wanted to add the wallpaper first to get a feel for what needed to go there.
I want to be sure because I can’t just start nailing things into the wallpaper without being certain. I know there are tricks to doing it without ruining the paper… but I’m just going to take my time.
I have my eye on a few pieces so I will repost photos as soon as we get things up on the wall. But I still wanted you guys to see this part of the house… it’s a work in progress.
We really loved this chandelier from Restoration Hardware because I thought it gave it a modern feel without going too crazy. I was pretty sure that the brass would match since I bought the kitchen hardware from RH as well.
But I have to be honest.. I ALMOST sent it back before we installed it because for some reason when it was just sitting on the table it looked Bronze… like to the point where I called and asked if they sent me the wrong one because this comes in bronze too on their website.
I kind of took a leap and just had them hang it and as soon as it went up it was like a magic trick and all of a sudden looked brass like the photos online! And the kind of brass you want it to look… like actual brass not yellowy at all. I love it so much and still love the gold accents throughout our house. RH’s brass color is just so beautiful.
How could you not love it?
I know it can be hard but try to make it a goal to eat at the dining room table with your family as much as you can. I promise, your kids will remember every funny, loud, chaotic, dramatic, and yummy dinner you serve. They may not remember what you talked about but they will remember how it made them feel.
Thanks Mom and Dad for putting up with us enough to force all 7 of us around a table to talk about our lives. I now make my 3 and 1 year old’s do it regularly… even though it usually ends in us talking about super hero characters and picking up food off the floor.
Design a life you love!
